9th & 10th January 2018 - A lucky tripTuesday & Wednesday 9th & 10th January 2018 For the two days following the railmotor trip, the main tour group had a free day in Zürich followed by a trip to Arosa on the RhB; we had a Global InterRail burning the proverbial hole in our pockets so chose to have a day on the Gäubahn into Germany on Tuesday which netted three new locos for haulage and achieved a long-held ambition on Wednesday morning. On our many visits to Zürich we have usually stayed in one of the three Accor branded hotels a short distance from Hardbrücke station and we had long been intrigued by a track that threaded its way in front of an event venue next to the station, under the road flyover then along the street, turning sharp right next to Sihlquai and into the Swissmill factory. We had heard a train heading along the line around 5 o’clock in the morning on one occasion from a hotel room that faced in that direction and had seen videos on YouTube but had never actually seen one of these workings. We got the impression that there could be up to three trips each day but, naturally, they would not run during the rush hour which was generally the time that we went out for the day. Rather unusually for us, we decided to have a lazy start to the day on Wednesday which proved to be an excellent move when we were confronted by the sight of the trip working standing outside the exhibition halls, waiting patiently to proceed along the street to the factory. Zürich Hardstrasse10th January 2018. Local trip working along the street to the Swissmill factory in Zürich. The loco, one of the MaK class 843 diesels, was propelling - its driver standing on the leading wagon driving it by radio from a control pack strapped to his chest. It was a bit of a challenge to get pictures without the road traffic in the way or, more importantly, avoid getting run over by anything but the train was not moving fast and a few different views were taken before following the train on foot round the corner to the Swissmill sidings. 843 057 at Zürich Hardstrasse10th January 2018. Local trip working propelling along the street to the Swissmill factory in Zürich. The loco didn’t stay there for long and was soon ready to return with a lengthy rake of wagons, it was most interesting to watch as it negotiated the busy road intersection, including two tram routes. It was also an education to watch the antics of the public which ranged from mild interest to complete oblivion and even outright stupidity; yes Mr BMW driver who nearly pulled out right in front of the loco, we’re talking about you! 843 057 at Zürich10th January 2018. Waiting to cross Limatstrasse with a trip working from the Swissmill factory. It was gone midday by now so we spent the rest of the afternoon increasing our Re4/4 mileage with the added bonus of catching up with one of our final few class 450 locomotives needed for haulage - a nice "cherry" on top of the days "cake". 450 016 at Zürich HB10th January 2018.
