3rd January 2018 - Delay DodgingWednesday 3rd January 2018 There was a good selection of trains at Bratislava hl st to choose from around 8am so we went out at the same time as yesterday to see what was on offer. The same shiny new “Vectron” locomotive (383 102) was on the 8:03 to Košice so, deciding that it was trying to tell us something, we boarded that train. A new class 240 was spied at Trnava on the Kúty service so that was the next move sorted though on this occasion we got off at Jablonica for the opposite working (also a “winner”) back to Trnava to do the through service to Prievidza that we’d done yesterday. 240 136 at Jablonica3rd January 2018. On Os2609 9:33 Kúty to Trnava. Today though we decided to get off at Zbehy and catch the hauled service to Nové Zámky that we’d noticed waiting there yesterday and were rewarded by the sight of one of the few remaining class 750 locos on the train. 750 182 at Zbehy3rd January 2018. On Os5028 12:09 Zbehy to Nové Zámky. It was rather a strange working as six minutes later the train stopped at Lužianky for 15 minutes then, three stops and 7km later, at Nitra for 13 minutes. We stayed on this train to Šurany where we managed to “scratch in” two more class 240s to get to Úľany nad Žitavou to do another one of those awkward branch lines that has no service between early morning and mid afternoon. This line now terminates at Zlaté Moravce which was originally a junction station on the line between Kozárovce, Dražovce and Lužianky, one of a number of lines that lost their passenger services in February 2003. There were quite a few people on the outward trip but not so many on the return journey and we had twelve minutes to make a photographic record of our visit before returning to the mainline where 240 078 was waiting on the connection to Šurany and Nové Zámky. 812 045 at Zlaté Moravce3rd January 2018. On Os5808 15:40 Zlaté Moravce to Úľany nad Žitavou. Although ZSSK don’t do much in the way of useful (to us at least) smart phone “apps”, they do have a rather useful on-line “mapa” on their main website which shows the position of all the passenger trains in Slovakia but, sadly, not the numbers of what is working them, unlike their Hungarian neighbours. A perusal of this revealed that our intended connection to Bratislava was running 34 minutes late and subsequent checks showed that it appeared to be stationary at Kozárovce, getting later and later. Some quick re-planning showed that we would probably be better off staying on the local train to Nové Zámky and catching the Budapest to Prague EC from there (which was running on time according to both MÁV and ZSSK). It worked a treat as the EC arrived at Nové Zámky only a couple of minutes late, depositing us at Bratislava 13 minutes later than originally intended. On the other hand, the “R” train from Zvolen was last spotted by us running around 80 minutes late so it was an excellent result to end the day.
