25th August 2014 - Fun in the SunMonday 25th August 2014 Guess what? Correct, we were up bright and early for train 1605 which, correct again, was worked by 363.020 but, disaster! – there was no buffet car so no second cup of tea to wash down breakfast. The overnight from München was 25 minutes late today, meaning an even later departure and whilst we were waiting, we noticed the station pilot fussing around at the rear of our train; it was removing the rear coach so the train would only be four coaches and a luggage van today rather than the usual load 7. Just for a change, 664.111 was the loco from Borovnica today, still no winning “Reagans” but at least it wasn’t silent Siemens rubbish. On the subject of the latter, ER20.003 was standing down the far end ready to pounce on MV481 so that, and the fact that the sun was starting to make an appearance for a change, determined that we would get off at Postojna and catch the bus to Rakek to take some photos. Things got off to a good start when Adria’s 2016.920 with 664.111 (that didn’t spend long at Prestranek!) appeared on a liner train almost as soon as we stepped off the coach. 2016 920 at Rakek25th August 2014. "Irena" with 664 111 on an eastbound liner train. Nothing else appeared as we walked round to the Gostilna / Pizzeria Furman just across the railway so we took advantage of the lull to check in to our abode for the night; a basic but pleasant room facing the village. A room facing the railway would have been nice but might have led to some rather rude awakenings during the night; an example of which was provided not long after we went back outside and set up when 664.103 roared past on maximum power and in maximum sun. 664 103 at Rakek25th August 2014. More freights appeared hauled by both 664s and 2016s; not quite as many as we were hoping for but maybe we were being a little unrealistic in our expectations. A break for lunch was no excuse for tearing ourselves away from the lineside as it was just a matter of taking a seat on the veranda of the Pizzeria, being served at the table and ambling across to the railway when the level crossing was activated. The latter gave so much warning that there was enough time to safely cross the line and set up a shot long before the train appeared, the sun having gone round to the opposite side by now. 2016 085 at Rakek25th August 2014. With ER20-003 (SŽ 645 003) After a very tasty lunch we crossed back over to the station side where additional entertainment was provided by a lorry laden with logs that had arrived and started to decant it’s load into an open wagon that was parked next to the loading dock. Rakek25th August 2014. Loading 31 79-SLO-SŽ 5951 372-0, an Eas-z type wagon, with logs. Photography was summarily suspended just after 14:00 when required 664.103 appeared on MV482 which was booked to stop at Rakek, a winning 664 at last. There was no way that we were going to let that escape so a ride through to Ljubljana was in order in the hope that 342.022 might be on the 15:10 to Rijeka – no such luck as it was still in the line of locos next to the station having not appeared to have moved an inch since 6am this morning. Before we departed from Rakek there had been more trains heading towards Koper than Ljubljana so it was no surprise to see two freights standing at Borovnica and 664.103 off our train being the only diesel there. This had led us to hope that 103 might be sent back on a freight with MV483 having a different loco but 103 was duly turned round to work MV483. Fair enough if there were no other locos in the vicinity but it was rather galling to see required 664.104 had turned up in our absence and was being attached to one of the stabled freight trains; if they had used the loco off MV482, the freight could have been away before we had even arrived at Ljubljana however, it was a case of “ours not to reason why”! Anyway, at least it was a 664 again so we settled down to enjoy the ride up the hill before getting off again at Rakek and resuming the photographic session in the mostly sunny conditions. Things were a little busier now and we stayed out until the light went, walking round to different positions and even photographing a cat and bright green grasshopper. Grasshopper at Rakek25th August 2014. All that walking round had worked up an appetite which was a good excuse to sample the pizza in the title of the establishment we were staying at; it didn’t disappoint and went down a treat as we sat on the veranda again to watch the action though not to rush off and photograph this time.
