2nd March 2014 - That's betterSunday 2nd March 2014 The 7:38 IC had a different GySEV class 470 on this morning and ran faultlessly, even arriving 4 minutes early at Szombathely giving us more time to take some photos before ambling across for the 9:08 to Pécs which was our 4th and final class 651, until / unless they hire some more. 651 002 at Szombathely2nd March 2014. GySEV 651 002 was previously DB 232 543 and is seen here working train 8902 08:12 Sopron to Pécs after taking over from the electric loco that worked from Sopron. Note the new Stadler "FLIRT" unit 415 502 in the background on a service to Szentgotthárd.
Two other "cranks" were already on the train which had come through from Sopron and the five of us settled down in the "bike area" at the front of the train where we (hopefully) wouldn't be disturbed by any "normal" passengers complaining about open windows even though it was exceptionally mild for the time of year. Phil and the pair of us got off at Zalaszentiván where there was 10 minutes available to take photos of both the 651 and the 418/3 on the working back to Szombathely. 418 320 at Zalaszentiván2nd March 2014. 8909 06:15 Pécs to Szombathely. There had been a derailment near Vasvár between Zalaszentiván and Szombathely earlier in the year and there were still a couple of wagons seemingly abandoned to their fate in a marshy area next to the line so the opportunity was taken to take a photo on the return journey. Oops!2nd March 2014. Remains of a wagon between Püspökmolnári and Vasvár following a derailment in October 2013. There was a lack of new locos required for haulage at Szombathely so we took 430 330 to Celldömölk, then caught its MÁV "sister" 431 290 back again and noticed that the 13:08 to Pécs was un-rebuilt 418 204, much more interesting than the rebuilt 418/3 variety, so it was off to Zalaszentiván again with the same 10 minutes for photo opportunities as before except that the class 630 electric loco that was stabled next to the station was now attached to a freight train and some way from the platform. 418 204 at Zalaszentiván2nd March 2014. On train 8904 13:08 Szombathely to Pécs. The loco back to Szombathely was one of the boring 418/3s which got us back in time to get one of the MÁV class 431 out to Sárvár for GySEV 430 333 back, not forgetting that travelling behind GySEV 430s was one of the main aims of the trip. Mention must be made of the incredibly helpful MÁV app for Android "Vonat Droid" which provides a map of Hungary which not only shows exactly where all the trains are and direction of travel but the type of traction and actual number of what is working the train, an enthusiast's dream. Of course this needs internet access but if even you are too tight (like us!) to pay for this, free wi-fi is more common in trains and stations in Hungary than many other countries. Naturally we decided to return to Győr on the 17:00 IC and, as Phil had already got a reservation for this train, it was simply a question of waving it under the booking clerks nose and asking for "two more please" which at least meant that we were seated together. 651 004 was the loco again to Csorna, from where 470 002 took over and we had a quick out and back to Ikrény to finish off the day which netted us a new GySEV 470 and a MÁV 480 in advertising livery which we attempted to photograph back at Győr with limited success. 480 022 at Győr2nd March 2014. 991 17:54 Sopron to Győr.
