25th October 2013 - Llangollen RailwayFriday 25th October 2013 With only two days to go before the clocks went back it was in ideal opportunity to squeeze a couple of outings in, especially when one of the BLS / D2578 group tours round Moreton Park was advertised on the Sunday which was something we had wanted to do for a long time. To tie-in with this we decided to visit the Llangollen and Welshpool & Llanfair Railways and photograph a few signal boxes in the area as well. The Llangollen Railway was well overdue a visit; our previous one was in March 2006 and memorable for the heavy overnight snowfall which rather disrupted the second day of the diesel gala held that weekend. D1566 at Llangollen12th March 2006. Day two of the Llangollen diesel gala was hit by heavy snow and an emergency timetable was hastily put together consisting of two sets top and tailed. Here is the 11:00 from Llangollen with the former 47449 at the head, 46010 was on the other end. There was no danger of anything like that today and the long drive there was mostly in bright sunshine though the forecast was for more changeable weather. There was only one train out today and it was hauled by 2-6-4T 80072, a most welcome requirement as we had been at a couple of other railways at the time it had been on hire to them without actually getting the chance to “bag” it for haulage. We could only get to Llangollen in time for the second of the three round trips but did manage to arrive in time for lunch and to get a photograph of the train returning from its first trip to Carrog. 80072 at Llangollen25th October 2013. On the 12:00 from Carrog. The sunshine held out for the first trip enabling us to have a wander round at Carrog and view the start of the extension to Corwen but, once back at Llangollen, our walk round the town had to be cut short when it started to rain. By the time we reached Berwyn it was raining with a vengeance; it was more like a monsoon at Glyndfyrdwy but stopped shortly after arriving at Corwen and the sun breaking through the clouds provided a lovely timeless glint shot of 80072 and its train - 2013 or 1963? 80072 at Carrog25th October 2013. Waiting to depart with the 16:00 to Llangollen. There was also enough time for a quick look at the top of Weston Rhyn signal box in the former goods yard, which is intended to eventually be re-used at Corwen, before boarding the train for the return journey to Llangollen. This time round, the beautiful countryside views were enhanced by the appearance of a rainbow rather than being obscured by heavy rain and an enjoyable day was ended with an excellent meal in the Corn Mill restaurant overlooking the River Dee.
