13th October 2013 - Hochrhein 150 and KandertalbahnSunday 13th October 2013 A leisurely start this morning as the steam special with 52 7596 did not leave Konstanz until after 10:00; in fact the loco and its train passed through Singen shortly before we departed on the 08:53 RE train. By the time we arrived there, the loco was standing next to the car park taking water from a hydrant and giving an opportunity for some photos. A few interested people were milling around but nowhere near the amount that there would have been in the UK and there probably would have been a large fence between the car park and the railway over here. 52 7596 at Konstanz13th October 2013. Moving off to collect the coaches after taking water. In contrast, the station was very busy and we were sure that there were more people than seats on the train but we think that everybody managed to squeeze on though a lot of the passengers only went as far as the first stop at Radolfzell. This station appeared to be one of the focal points of the celebrations and there was a line-up of some historic locos and coaches plus 146 230 giving cab rides and the steam special had a 20 minute stand there giving just enough time to photograph everything on display. E40 128 at Radolfzell13th October 2013. E40 128 (140 128) and 146 230, part of a small display to mark 150 years of the Hochrheinbahn. A HzL DMU on a working to Stockach stands in the other platform. The big 2-10-0 did not need to exert itself with only four coaches in tow but the climb up the bank back into Germany from Schaffhausen (in Switzerland) produced a bit more noise. The 150 year celebrations also doubled as a re-opening ceremony for the line between Schaffhausen and Erzingen which had been closed for most of the year for electrification but, rather strangely, despite the shiny new electric masts, re-laid track and new station at Beringerfeld, two of the intermediate stations still had semaphore signals! The steam special terminated at Lauchringen but, as the next train we wanted to catch did not stop there, we bailed off at Erzingen grabbing a quick photo as 52 7596 departed. 52 7596 at Erzingen (Baden)13th October 2013. Working the 10:09 Konstanz to Lauchringen, one of a number of special trains run to celebrate 150 years of the Hochrheinbahn. We caught up with the Kriegslok again as we shot through Lauchringen and there was also another small display of locomotives, namely 218 396, E41 001 and a class 217 (014, we think) – the 218 being of particular interest following our 500km round mad dash from Düsseldorf to Basel Bad for it three months previously (see report). At Waldshut, Prussian P8 4-6-0 no. 2455 “Posen” nearly tempted us to get off and have a ride over the Sauschwänzlebahn behind it but we thought it better to carry on and do what we had planned. This was a trip on the Kandertalbahn which involved a change of trains at Basel Bad to get to Haltingen where the preserved line’s station was a short walk down the road from the rather dilapidated DB station. A pleasant surprise awaited us there as the loco was not the former industrial 0-6-0T that we were expecting but a former Austrian Railways 2-8-2T of the same class that we had ridden behind to Pamhagen just over a year previously (see report). 378.78 at Haltingen13th October 2013. The former ÖBB 93 1378 stands at the Kandertalbahn station in Haltingen with train P4 the 14:15 to Kandern. The line itself was an unremarkable but pleasant trundle for about 8 miles through the countryside ending in a reasonably sized station in the small town of Kandern which had lost its passenger service at the end of 1983. There was an hour to have a quick walk round and look at the railway’s facilities but, other than one diesel parked outside, everything else was locked up in the loco shed or new-looking carriage shed, not so interesting from the enthusiasts view but a good idea in respect of security and preservation. In fact the carriages that we were riding in were beautifully presented and a lot of work had been put into restoring them so keeping them in a shed would help keep them in this excellent condition. 44 at Kandern13th October 2013. 3rd class coach built in 1894 for the Kaiserstuhlbahn. Both outward and return journeys were quite well filled so it was good to see that the line looked to be well used by the locals, quite a few of whom got on and off at the intermediate stations. We lingered to watch the loco run round back at Haltingen before making our way to the DB station where a bonus photo was taken of a Crossrail train heading north just before our RE service turned up. 185 592 at Haltingen13th October 2013. After a mere eight minutes on the loco-hauled double deck coaches it was onto the rattling rough-riding DMU for over an hour back to Singen where 52 7596 was preparing to return to its base at Rottweil. A fare was available for the journey but a quick look at the timetable revealed that it would cost us two more tickets to return to Singen on an IC train so it was off to the Am Stadtgarten restaurant for dinner instead.
