9th September 2013 - The long way roundMonday 9th September 2013 Another transit day today and, true to form, it was via a round-about route – why go directly from Cottbus to Stralsund when you can go via Dresden? The promised rain had arrived with a vengeance this morning and we got quite wet even on the short dash across the road to the station where an East-West Railways class 232 was posing nicely for photographs on a lengthy freight. 232 294 at Cottbus9th September 2013. Our train to Ruhland was one of the nasty new class 442 units which was standing on one of the open platforms so causing another mad dash in the rain trying to avoid getting too wet. We were so concerned with trying to get out of the rain that getting the unit number was the last thing on our mind and we were that uninterested that we forgot when we changed trains so it will remain on record as 442 xxx, we just don’t “do” units! Things improved at Ruhland with a V60 loco to photograph and a 143 on double deck coaches to take us to Dresden, where it had stopped raining but was still overcast and fairly chilly. We had three hours in Dresden and were hoping to catch some of the handful of class 182 locos that we still need for haulage but had to be content with just one, a couple of 143s and a few photographs of various things including trams. 2816 at Dresden Hbf9th September 2013. Bombardier NGT D12 DD tram calling at Dresden Hbf, taken from the station platform. EC378 was the chosen train to get us to Stralsund and it was no real surprise, given the amount of single line working between Dresden and the Czech border, when it appeared on the board as 15, then 20 minutes late. At that point a freight passed through heading north so the EC was obviously more than 20 late; in the end it arrived 35 minutes late and departed 29 late after a fairly slick loco change to a class 120 which we were slightly surprised (and pleased) to have rather than the usual class 101. 120 151 at Dresden Freiberger Straße9th September 2013. EC173 06:14 Hamburg-Altona to Villach Hbf. The train was formed of Czech coaches and was quite well filled though most of the passengers got off at Berlin as we had guessed and the train left there on time thanks to the 23 minutes of standing time at Berlin Hbf. The rest of the journey was uneventful and the only thing of note seen was a V60 type loco with a train of hoppers on the short harbour line at Anklam until we passed one of the rapidly disappearing class 110 electric locos as we ran into the station at Stralsund. This dropped onto the rear of our train as it went forward to Ostseebad Binz, which required a reversal, and it was required for haulage but the need to book into the hotel and have something to eat was greater and we guessed that the loco would probably return from Binz in the morning. 110 469 at Stralsund Hbf9th September 2013. Departing Stralsund on EC378 06:13 Bratislava hl st to Ostseebad Binz. This assumption on our part was correct and further digging uncovered the fact that 110 469 had been at Stralsund for most of the summer doing this train so we took a chance and decided to carry on with our plan for tomorrow, leaving the 110 until Wednesday. The hotel zum Bahnhof (Hotel Stralsund since October 2013) was opposite the station which is some distance from the main shops and restaurants but the Brasserie Grand Café in Neuer Markt suggested by the hotel receptionist didn’t disappoint, a view presumably shared by many others as this was by far the busiest eating establishment round the main square.
