28th August 2013 - Thunder on line 30Wednesday 28th August 2013 Another lie-in again today as we wanted to have a dabble on the Table 30 diesels between Koprivnica and Osijek and there wasn’t much point going out for the first departure at 07:04, much better to have an extra forty winks and catch the loco on the return journey – it should work back from Osijek. We looked at the 09:40 to Vincovci with a view to spending 20 minutes at Dugo Selo but it was worked by one of the locos that we had last night, however we noticed a class 2132 shunting locomotive attached to the Budapest portion of the 10:00 departure in the opposite platform. It was a long walk round to cross via the subway so we merely copied the local populace and walked straight across the track, after carefully looking both ways of course, and settled down in a compartment in the Slovenian coach. 2132 323 at Zagreb Gl kol27th January 2013. When train B703 arrived from Rijeka, the class 1141 hauling it was detached and went off to stand in the middle road out of the way; the 2132 then pushed the Budapest-bound coaches onto the front of the ones bound for Ogulin then the 1141 backed on again. This simple shunt appeared to confuse many of the passengers and there was much traipsing up and down the platform and scratching of heads as they presumably tried to figure out which bit of the train was going where. Shortly after the train moved off, we were joined in our compartment by a young British couple, also on Interrails, who were heading towards Budapest and also worried that they were in the correct portion of the train. They were probably surprised to find two other Brits already seated there who knew exactly what was going on and what would happen at Koprivnica, where we left them and headed towards the other portion of the train to see if our guess of which 2044 it would be was right. It was indeed 2044 014 and there were some nice empty compartments to choose from in the front coach so we could enjoy the journey with the window open without anybody else complaining about the draught / noise. 2044 014 at Koprivnica28th August 2013. B703 05:45 Rijeka to Osijek. The weather until now had been mostly overcast and dry but, as we made our way east the weather deteriorated and by the time we reached Slatina rumbles of thunder could be heard accompanied by distant flashes. Seeing us run down what passed as a car park to take a photo the driver must have decided to compete with the incipient thunderstorm and slammed the 2044 straight into notch 8 on departure with the resultant racket and cloud of “clag” providing a thunderstorm in its own right. 2044 014 at Slatina28th August 2013. 2044 014 adds to the darkening sky whailst working B703 05:45 Rijeka to Osijek. We intended to have a walk down the road to see if there was anywhere to have a meal later but only got as far as the level crossing a short distance away when the rain finally arrived; a restaurant was noted as we dashed back to the station though it did look as though it might not be open. As expected, 2044 013 was the next loco to appear on exactly the same working as two days ago but this time we got off at Virje and the sun was out so another dash down the car park secured a decent picture, without any fireworks on this occasion. 2044 013 at Virje28th August 2013. Departing with B702 12:03 Osijek to Rijeka. 2044 019 was the third 2044 of the day and, as a bonus was also the “correct” way round; having only one cab these locos are like steam engines in that they only really make a decent shot when facing in one direction unless trying for something more “arty farty”. 2044 019 at Virje28th August 2013. On train 981 12:53 Zagreb Gl kol to Osijek. The restaurant at Slatina proved not to be closed (we had been looking at the adjacent function room) and provided a very nice pizza which there was just enough time to eat before a gentle walk back to the station for the train back to Zagreb. The loco this time was 2044 015, not 014 as we were half expecting, bringing the total to four different diesels for the day. Number 15 had very noisy fans which were roaring away to some fine order due to the loco being drive quite hard as we headed towards a very threatening sky and it was not long before flashes of forked lightning could be seen as well. There was no doubt some thunder to accompany the lightning but not much chance of hearing that above the thunder that was emanating from the engine. By the time we reached Pitomača the rain was torrential but it had eased a little by Kloštar where we crossed the Inter City train from Zagreb and stopped altogether by Koprivnica where we reversed and 1142 009 took us back to for our last night in the Croatian capital. 2044 015 at Kloštar28th August 2013. On 782 16:20 Osijek to Zagreb Gl kol, waiting to cross an oncoming IC train in the aftermath of a thunderstorm.
