4th February 2012 - Freezing FuldaSaturday 4th February 2012 Next instalment, a move into Germany; Erfurt, Thuringia to be precise. Some thought was given about which route to take but, not wishing to arrive too late, we decided on the most direct route back over the Gaubahn to Stuttgart, then via Frankfurt (Main) and Fulda. Two more Re4/4s took us to Singen where boring old 101 012 did the honours to Stuttgart where we had around 50 minutes to wait in the sun and extreme cold. In theory, we should have had a 5 minute connection to our last train of the day at Fulda but sadly, as is often the case with DB these days, we missed this by a good 15 minutes due to the ICE train we caught from Stuttgart suffering a very slow journey on the Neubaustrecke to Mannheim – this included a visit through the platform loops at Vaihingen. Fulda was as freezing cold as everywhere else and it was starting to snow again; the class 212 “coathanger” locos and their attendant emergency train only providing a minor distraction from the biting cold. 714 012 at Fulda A further downside of missing our intended connection was that the train an hour later was an ICE unit rather than a loco-hauled IC but at least we did arrive there in good time for an evening meal at Zum Goldenen Schwan which we can recommend if you ever visit Erfurt.
