12th February 2012 - A day out with 01 1066Sunday 12th February 2012 Following the late arrival back last night, it was just as well that today’s train was not booked to depart until after 10:00 though we quickly realised that it would be late when 01 1066 appeared light engine with both of it’s tenders. The loco is an oil-burner and appears to manage quite easily on one tenderful of oil for a day out; we can only presume that the second tender is used when away from home (Heilbronn) to carry extra supplies. It very kindly came into one of the centre roads and proceeded to run round the second tender giving those of us who had bothered to dash through the subway the chance to get some photos on this fine, sunny but still very cold morning. 01 1066 at Nürnberg Hbf Once the loco had deposited the second tender in the carriage sidings and collected the stock we departed some 40 minutes late. A perusal of the times showed that we had some “fotohalts” shown but, unfortunately, the first two of these fell victim to the late running and it wasn’t looking too good for the final one when we stopped in Bayreuth station for rather longer than booked. We don’t know if anything was said to the organisers or whether they decided to let us passengers have one “fotohalt” anyway, but we pulled into Harsdorf and much shouting ensued so it was all out and a brisk walk to the level crossing south of the station which was an excellent location with plenty of room for everybody to spread out. The train was backed up and 01 1066 put on an impressive display as it arrived at the station for a second time; an added bonus being the presence of semaphore signals which looked as though they would not be around much longer judging by the amount of re-signalling paraphernalia lying about. 01 1066 at Harsdorf There was one final bit of excitement before arriving at our destination of Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg; an ascent of the Schiefe Ebene, around 6 kilometres of steeply graded track which should test our locomotive even with only 5 coaches. There were plenty of photographers in evidence along the lineside as we stormed up the hill, 01 1066 performing well until it suddenly slipped on the steepest part. Despite the best efforts of the driver, the train rapidly came to a stand, now what? We hadn’t brought a diesel with us and the nearest one was probably in Nürnberg so 01 1066 would have to extract itself from the situation all on its own. Just as thoughts of either setting back to somewhere a little less steep / curvaceous or dividing the train started to enter our heads, we set back a short distance and had another go, this time successfully reaching Markschorgast. We had planned to alight from the tour here and have a short trip to cover the required line between Münchberg and Helmbrechts before the return trip, but the problems encountered during the climb had caused quite a bit of delay to the service trains which would probably have caused us to miss our connection and it was still far too cold to be hanging around outside for any length of time. As there was an extra trip up the bank available for €10, we decided on that and a look round the museum at Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg instead, the second run being rather more successful than the first one due to a sensible decision being made to leave one of the coaches behind. The museum was interesting and nicely presented but looks as if it would be better to visit during the summer when there might be more going on outside, there was some narrow gauge track and a couple of sheds that looked as if they might contain something to run around on said track. O&K shunter at Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg Back with the train and departure time came and went with the loco still down the far end of the museum site, it turned out it was trying to take water, an activity which was not being helped by the extremely cold weather. It eventually returned to the train about 30 minutes after we should have left but our assumption that we would depart exactly an hour late proved to be correct and we remained at that level of lateness for the whole journey. Despite all this, it was a good day out and we will certainly consider booking further trips with UEF if the opportunity arises in the future. 01 1066 at Nürnberg Hbf
