25th September 2012 - The wrong coachesTuesday 25th September 2012 Having had enough of scratching around trying (and mostly failing) to get some new locos for haulage, we chose to go on a scenic run and take things as they come, needless to say our chosen IC from Wien Westbf produced a new 1016 loco; perhaps that is the way to do this bashing lark, work out a trip based on route or mileage and wait for the new locos to turn up! 1016 041 at Salzburg Hbf As we passed St. Pölten, we noted that the 08:30 to Ober Grafendorf / Mariazell was a pair of 5090 single car units, which was no real surprise to us and was also the only real thing of note we saw before arriving at Salzburg in bright sunshine. Yet again, one of our bright ideas to get an extra loco in came to nought with a “dud” 1144 on the local service to Wörgl so we took advantage of the bright sunshine and lingered to take some photos with a rather colourful block of flats as a backdrop. 5047 064 and 5047 088 at Salzburg Hbf Things started to look up on the new loco front as well when a new 1116 turned up on the IC to Villach which we took to Bischofshofen to catch our intended train towards Leoben which was a German Railways class 101 on German push-pull InterCity set. We have had all 145 of these locos for haulage so an Austrian loco would have been preferable but sometimes beggars can’t be choosers. Somewhere around Selzthal, we noticed that the train was running around five minutes late which would make our connection rather tight but there was no need to worry as the train back to Vienna was waiting at the junction at St. Michael so there was no rush to change trains. The Villach to Vienna train had been chosen as it conveys IC coaches and car carriers on the rear of the Railjet set, we headed for the IC coaches and were gratified to find them pretty empty, very empty in fact – eerily empty, not even a conductor. It finally dawned on us that something really wasn’t quite right when we got to the first tunnel and discovered that the lights weren’t on, this prompted us to take a walk through the two coaches to discovery that not only were we the only two people in that section, three of the four doors were locked, the only open one being the one we had entered through and which we presume the shunter who prepared the train at Villach had exited though and omitted to lock. As there was no escape due to being coupled next to the driving trailer of the Railjet set, we settled down to enjoy the solitude and the ride over the Semmering with the intention of bailing off into the other part of the train or changing trains altogether at Wiener Neustadt. No such luck, the platform was on the wrong side so it was Wien Meidling or bust; fortunately the platform was on the correct side here so we did not need to cause a problem by pulling the communication cord to get out! 1116 235 at Wien Meidling We met up with our Austrian friend at Wien Westbf and went for a meal in the Mariahilferbräu before rounding the day off nicely in a Romanian coach with a new Hungarian Railways class 470 “Taurus” loco on EN347 to Hegyeshalom in Hungary, which was new track beyond Parndorf for us as well and another new class 470 on the return with EN466 to Zürich back to Westbf.
