The 'A' class locos were built by Metropolitan Vickers , Dukinfield Works in Manchester during 1955 and 1956. Their original Crossley engines were not very reliable and the whole class was re-engined with General Motors 12-645E ngines of 1,325hp between 1968 and 1971.
They were known as the 'A' class under the original CIE classification but became the 001 class from 1972 when the letter system was dropped.
