23rd September 2014 - Time to go homeTuesday 23rd September 2014 An early afternoon flight meant that we had the morning free and we considered doing the normal sightseeing thing but the weather forecast was spot-on when it promised heavy rain. A quick glance out of the window before going down to breakfast indicated that it had either stopped or eased off greatly but by the time we had finished eating it was chucking it down in Biblical proportions again to the extent that we considered going back to our room and hibernating there until it was time to head to the airport. However, with a three hour plus flight to come we thought it best to go and get some fresh air so it was on with the waterproofs, deep breath and off to the station where yellow and blue livery 44.002 was on the diverted 9:05 to Burgas this morning. 44 002 at Sofia23rd September 2014. 3623 9:05 Sofia to Burgas. 45.182 was being attached to another train as we left so we got off at Poduyane, waited about 20 minutes for it then rode on it to Iskar where there was a class 55 diesel shunting and a pair of class 43 electrics waiting to head east on a freight. 55 078 at Iskar23rd September 2014. It was still raining heavily so when 44.096 took us by surprise when it turned up on a local train from Septemvri (we were expecting an EMU) it looked like a good move to get on. Off again at Poduyane to wait for the “fast” from Plovdiv but that was an EMU (we were expecting it to be hauled) which we got on regardless as we didn’t fancy waiting another 20 minutes for what might well be another EMU or, even worse, getting caught out and having to repeat yesterday’s taxi experience. We had just over an hour back at the hotel to dry out before using the hotel’s own shuttle service to the airport which cost 9 Euro / 18 Lev each and was booked with reception the previous evening. The driver was one of the hotel’s “doormen” and we had the 12-seater minibus to ourselves for the journey which took around 30 minutes reaching the airport in plenty of time for the flight despite encountering some heavy traffic en route. As the flight took over three hours, a hot meal was served which passed some of the time leaving plenty more to reflect on our final foreign trip of the year and turn our thoughts to 2015.
