8th June 2014 - Mit Volldampf in den TaunusSunday 8th June 2014 Not an early start this morning so we had a relaxed stroll to the station allowing plenty of time to buy a Hessen ticket for our travels today before boarding a HLB DMU to Königstein (Taunus) where there was a Bahnhofsfest. Our reason for attending was not this but rather the hourly specials running between here and Frankfurt-Höchst run by the Historische Eisenbahn Frankfurt which were advertised to be worked by steam locos 01.118 or 52.4867 and diesel 218.105. Königstein is a rather compact station and we immediately noticed that it was not possible to run round the three coaches and a luggage van which formed the special train, so we guessed that both steam locos would be working rather than one or the other. 01.118, an ex DR 4-6-2 express passenger loco, was first off and departed a little late after some faffing around with the luggage van. The line to Königstein is steeply graded so it was a fairly sedate trundle downhill tender first to Frankfurt-Höchst for a quick run round followed by an entertaining run back up the hill. 01 118 at Königstein8th June 2014. Preparing for it's next working at the "Mit Volldampf in den Taunus" event. Unbroken sunshine appeared to have brought the crowds out so we elected to stay put on the train as 52.4867 was attached to the other end for the trip back to Frankfurt-Höchst. Although we were still running a little late there was more time to run round at the other end so we grabbed the chance to nip over to the opposite platform to get a photo though it would have helped if the platform had been a little longer. 52 4867 at Frankfurt-Höchst8th June 2014. On train 202 the 11:26 to Königstein run as part of the "Mit Volldampf in den Taunus" event in conjunction with the Bahnhofsfest at Königstein. Departure was right time and the 2-10-0 Kriegslok made short work of the fairly flat section to Kelkheim; but once we had crossed 218 105 on it’s two coach special there, the climbing started and the loco was unleashed. It was absolutely superb and we would never have believed that it was possible to get such stunning aural entertainment on a short branch line train; one old chap standing on the platform at Schneidhain raised his hands towards the heavens and looked as if he thought the world was coming to an end as we thundered past! All too soon we arrived back at Königstein and the fun was over so it was time for a wurst with senf (sausage with mustard) for lunch and hands in pocket for 2 Euros each for a cab ride on Köf 322 607 in the yard – cab rides do count in our book! 322 607 at Königstein8th June 2014. Built by Krauss-Maffei in 1934, works no. 15429, 322 607 (Köf 4293) was giving cab rides at the annual Bahnhofsfest. We had a further wander round then, slightly reluctantly, decided to take diesel 218 105 back to Frankfurt- Höchst. It would have been nice to have another trip behind 52.4867 but with tickets on the specials costing €9 single and €14 return per person we did not want to deplete our stash of Euros so soon into the trip. Frankfurt-Höchst8th June 2014. VT204 has just terminated with HLB24276 the 13:44 from Bad Soden (Taunus) whilst 218 105 has arrived on train 205 the 14:25 from Königstein (Taunus), a special working for "Mit Volldampf in den Taunus" event. A required class 143 electric had been spied earlier working to Limburg (Lahn) and we were lucky enough to drop straight onto it at Höchst and head back to Frankfurt after photographing the 218. There was not a lot of choice for loco-hauled trains at Frankfurt Hbf as it was a Sunday and the engineering works were still on but we quickly found a class 114 which was taken to Hanau where another class 143 was standing alluringly in the other part of the station there. This was on some sort of shuttle service to Frankfurt Ost via Maintal, though we could not find out any details on the very handy EU Rail phone app, and we very nearly got left behind at the Ostbf when the train reversed a lot more quickly than we were expecting. Frankfurt is not one of our stronger areas for haulage in Germany, even more so since the influx of class 114 locos from the Berlin area, so we were pleased with 114 023 to take us back to the Hbf where the other loco on the Limburg circuit was quickly scooped in before heading into the city for dinner.
