10th June 2014 - Bull RunTuesday 10th June 2014. Suitcases at the ready we bade farewell to a much cooler Frankfurt, though we would be passing back through in six days en route back north. Just as we had done 18 months ago we would be using EC113 to head south to Ljubljana but on this occasion we would be remain based in Slovenia rather than carry onto Zagreb after a few days. We were slightly taken aback to see the stock arrive in service from somewhere (Stuttgart?) with a good load of commuters and with only one loco; it had been top & tail on the previous occasions we had seen it. As we walked down the platform the second loco appeared which was also a class 1016 loco, presumably off the shed, and it was also noted that the coaches were the wrong way round; probably a legacy of the weekend’s engineering works at Stuttgart. It would be interesting to see how they would turn the train back round, it had to be reversed somewhere to ensure that the Zagreb portion was on the correct end at Villach. 1016 024 at Frankfurt (M) Süd10th June 2014. Now on the rear of EC113 08:22 Frankfurt (M) Hbf to Klagenfurt Hbf after working the short distance from the Hbf. This train is not booked to come here but did on this occasion in order to reverse the train so that the coaches were the correct way round for when the train divides at Villach Hbf. We didn’t have to wait long to find out when we promptly shot off towards Frankfurt Süd and reversed in the platform there, instantly making the train 20 minutes late but we did get some new track in the book between Stresemannallee and Frankfurt-Louisa. Despite the late running there did not appear to be any urgency to pick up time so we gently jogged along to the extent that the train was 30 minutes late by the time it reached Stuttgart, even though both locos had their pantographs raised. Unlike our previous trip on this train, the rear loco remained attached München and we did make up a few minutes and departed Salzburg 15 late after the rear loco was detached there. 1016 041 at Salzburg Hbf25th September 2012. Windscreen washing finished, 1016 041 departs Salzburg Hbf on IC860 07:40 Wien Westbf to Bregenz. Time to relax now as all we had to do was remain comfortably seated until we were deposited in Ljubljana; wrong! As the conductor came through checking tickets he announced that a change of train was needed at Villach which turned out to be from platform 8 on the station avoiding line which was some distance away along a new subway. An ÖBB diesel unit was throbbing away in the platform when we arrived but it, fortunately, was not EC213 which turned up shortly after the unit left the platform behind Almdudler livery 541 013. So there was a final bit of bonus new track which re-joined the usual route near Villach West and a five minute late arrival in Ljubljana where it was still nice and warm but without the excessive heat.
