29th January 2013 - Show me the way to go homeTuesday 29th January 2013 Another early-ish start again , this time laden with suitcase as were on our way back to Germany after five and a bit entertaining days in this interesting country. Not only was it still very cold, it was quite foggy as well this morning making for an atmospheric final photo before heading back west. 1142 007 at Zagreb Gl kol The fog was even thicker by the time we got to the border checks at Savski Marof and Dobova and we departed a few minutes late from the latter behind the same class 541 loco that took us into Slovenia 11 days previously, a neat bit of symmetry but not really appreciated by two cranks hoping for a new loco. The sun was making attempts to break through the fog as we made our way across Slovenia and it was looking quite pleasant outside by the time we reached the Austrian border, but a quick perambulate down the platform at Villach showed that it was still very cold outside. We correctly guessed that the loco that brought the Klagenfurt portion in would detach and shunt the Zagreb coaches to the front of the train and this was done with the minimum of fuss before we set off over the Tauern towards Salzburg and Germany. It wasn’t long before it started to snow and it was falling quite heavily on the highest section of the route and we also passed a couple of “ski specials” with interesting motive power. As we descended the snow stopped falling and there was less on the ground and by the time we got into Germany it looked like it was trying to rain. The train had around 15 minutes to reverse and add a loco to the front at München, it arrived in platform 11 and we were at the front a few yards away from Starbucks so that will be two large teas zum mit nehmen bitte! The amount of snow on the ground got less and less as we headed towards Stuttgart and it was also raining on and off; fortunately it was not actually precipitating when we arrived which was just as well as the hotel (Mercure) that we had booked proved to be a little bit further down the road than we had originally anticipated when we booked it, though we had suspected that might be the case. Still, we needed some exercise after sitting on a train all day and feasting at our favourite Block House restaurant. Comments
