8th September 2013 - Magdeburger HafenbahnSunday 8th September 2013 Following our trip behind steam yesterday it was right back up to date this morning as we caught a new ET445 double deck EMU to Berlin on the first leg of a journey to Magdeburg, changing onto a slightly, well, 15 to 16 years older class 402 ICE unit. Magdeburg Hbf was reached on time and off we went in search of a taxi to take us to Magdeburg Hafen; we could have got a tram or walked from Magdeburg Neustadt station but were feeling rather lazy after the long day yesterday. The area outside the station proved to be rather dead, just an empty taxi rank and a combined bus / tram stop with no passengers waiting which we went to investigate whilst we waited for a taxi to arrive of which two did after 10 to 15 minutes. To cut a long story short neither taxi driver appeared to be very interested in taking us to the Hafen even though we had the location and street written down so, with the aid of a very helpful local whose attitude put the taxi drivers to shame, we found the correct tram stop which was a few hundred yards away. 1380 at Alte Neustadt8th September 2013. Tram type NGT8D (2) arriving at Alte Neustadt on line 2. For the huge sum of 2 Euros, tram 2 took us virtually straight to the Hafen which was a short walk away from the last stop on the line and easily found. By now we had missed the first departure of the four special trains but this was not a problem as there was plenty of interest to look at and photograph including a Magdeburger Hafenbahn V100 giving cab rides for a fare of 2 Euros. Our first thought was that this was aimed at children but the man in charge happily sold us some tickets without comment so it must have been available to kids of all ages and sizes. 1201 004 at Magdeburg Hafen8th September 2013. This loco, owned by Magdeburger Hafenbahn GmbH, was formerly DR V100 004, then 110 004 before becoming DB 201 004 then MHG 1, which it still carries along with its UIC number of 92 80 1201 004-9 D-MHG. It was giving cab rides as part of a festival run by the Magdeburger Eisenbahnfreunde. After having a good look round all the various sized locos on display we made our way over to the “platform” at Hubbrücke for the second of the special shuttles over the Hafenbahn system where we bumped into the same friends that we had seen at Meiningen works yesterday who had been on the first train. The special trains had been advertised as being hauled by one of the Hafenbahn’s former DB V100 locos but was in fact topped and tailed by two V60 type 0-8-0 shunting locos, one of which was owned by the MHG; close, but not an issue for us as it was required for haulage and our primary reason for visiting was for the track in any case. MHG 3 at Magdeburg Hafen8th September 2013. V60D type shunter built by LEW in 1976, works number15365 arriving at Handelshafen on a special from Hanse Terminal. The journey on the Hafenbahn went to Hanse Terminal about 6 kilometres away and took just over 20 minutes, the train stopping next to a windmill factory in the shadow of an example of their product. The wooden steps that were used to board the train at Hubbrücke had been taken along for the ride and were used to allow the passengers to get out and wander round or take pictures though getting a shot of the train and the windmill in the same frame proved something of a challenge. MHG 3 at Hanse Terminal8th September 2013. One of the Magdeburger Eisenbahnfreunde shuttles from Handelshafen stands in the shadow of one of the products of the adjacent factory. We had heard a rumour that there would be a loco change for the two o’clock trip so it wasn’t a great surprise when the train stopped in the yard about half a mile before the end of the line at Hubbrücke. The replacement loco was an ex Danish Railways “Nohab” MY1138, or V170 1138 / 92 80 1227 004-9 D-CLR to give it’s official number though the loco was finished in historic DSB livery so, as it seemed a bit of a shame to depart with less than half a mile of haulage behind this venerable locomotive, we did the next round trip as well for good measure. MY 1138 at Hanse Terminal8th September 2013. Cargo Logistik Rail Services' former DSB "Nohab" MY 1138 has a turn on the shuttles run between Handelshafen and Hanse Terminal by Magdeburg Eisenbahnfreunde. Back at Hubbrücke there was a poster advertising a vintage tram shuttle on Line 2 between Alter Markt and the Hauptbahnhof but with the next departure being imminent it was a case of either photographing it as it left or a mad dash to the tram stop to catch it; we chose the former as there was plenty of time to spare before our chosen train and the fare on both was the same (2 Euros). 413 at Alte Neustadt8th September 2013. Preserved tram connecting Depot Sudenburg and Magdeburg Hbf with Alte Neustadt. The train back to Berlin was a double ICE2 set and, once there, it was a choice between grabbing something quick to eat and catching the sole IC train of the day to Cottbus or having a more substantial meal and catching one of the RE services. Loco hauled verses an EMU? No contest, so it was into the Asian fast food outlet at Berlin Hbf where confusion appeared to be reigning with several people querying their orders, including ourselves; however we did get everything we had ordered eventually!
