21st April 2012 - To ME or not to ME*21st April 2012 * With apologies to William Shakespeare Today we started the “ME bashing” in earnest with ME 1519 on the conveniently timed 08:27 to Kalundborg which was taken all the way to the end as this was also new track. En route we worked out how to cover the rest of the locos working on the line toady and passed through some quite heavy rain which had thankfully stopped by the time we reached Kalundborg. This was not dissimilar to somewhere like Oban or Holyhead with a ferry terminal next to the station though there did not appear to be too many sailings out of there. ME1519 at Kalundborg The train had a 45 minute turn-round and we expected it to stay in the platform, but the driver promptly changed ends and took it down to the carriage sidings, raising our hopes of a different loco for the return; no such luck though as it returned to the platform about 15 minutes before departure time. We doubled back to the junction station of Tølløse, where the sound of 1519 powering away reminded us of Ireland where we have spent many happy trips photographing and riding behind 071 class locos. ME1519 at Tølløse Following a quick look at the local shops and connecting Regionaltog service to Slagelse, we boarded ME 1514 to start a series of moves to net the other locos working on the line, helped by the fact that one of them (ME 1521) had been “scooped in” last night. By now, the sun had appeared which helped a bit with taking photos, an activity which did not cause any problems – in fact one of the drivers even gave a toot and a wave as he applied maximum power straight from the off at one of the stations for our benefit. ME 1529 at Svebølle We made sure that we were back in Copenhagen by 17:00 to check the station office to see if they had found my coat. Following a full description on my part and a rattling of computer keys on theirs, the errant coat was returned to its forgetful owner none the worse for its overnight stay in lost property; it was promptly put back on despite the warmth – don’t want to leave it somewhere again, might not be so lucky next time! We then went for a quick walk in the city and an early dinner before settling on a trip to Helsingør (the setting for William Shakespeares "Hamlet", hence the title) on a modern EMU. Helsingør was an impressive terminal station next to the ferry port though it was shown as being on a through line on our map, this was proved correct when we wandered outside the station to find a single line sneaking round the side of the station building and heading off north sandwiched between a road and the harbour. Hoping for a picture of a train on this line, we wandered back to the station to check the times and found that one would be leaving in a couple of minutes. Rushing back down the road we managed to get a couple of photos of the train passing the station and the harbour with Kronborg Castle in the background despite the fading light. Helsingør
